Burdock acres farm journal: september 2025
September kicked off with a special project — decorating the iconic Cabot Yellow Barn for fall. We filled the space with square bales, colorful mums, and cheerful pumpkins, bringing that warm harvest feel that makes autumn in Vermont so special. Seeing our work featured in such a recognizable spot was both humbling and exciting — a true sign that fall had arrived in the Northeast Kingdom.
From there, the month unfolded in a blur of transitions. The sunflower fields began to fade, our hands stayed stained with the last of summer’s color, and the air took on that unmistakable crispness that signals the change of seasons.
We hosted our final You-Pick Sunflower weekend, turning what could’ve been a disappointment into a heartfelt thank-you event after an early frost touched the fields. Families still came out to wander through the golden rows, clip a few perfect blooms, and snap photos in the fading light — a reminder that beauty still lingers, even at the end of a season.
As the You-Pick wrapped, our focus shifted toward fall work — harvesting and arranging mums, setting up pumpkins for local store displays, and getting ready for the cooler months ahead. The barn greenhouse project made steady progress, with cedar shingles going up and Solexx panels ready to be installed — each piece bringing us one step closer to a space that will carry Burdock Acres blooms further into the year.
We also wrapped up a few meaningful collaborations this month, including floral centerpieces for Jasper Hill Farm’s dinner with the Whole Foods team and our continued weekly deliveries to The Willey’s Store, East Calais General Store, Cabot Creamery at The Yellow Barn, and The Galaxy Bookstore. Every partnership feels like a small celebration of local connection and Vermont pride.
And of course, September wouldn’t be complete without our annual family photos — a sweet reminder of how quickly the seasons (and kids) grow. Chances are, if you’ve admired a beautiful photo on our website or social media, it was captured by the wonderful Maggie Fitzgibbons, who has an incredible way of freezing the magic of our farm in time.
Even as the days shorten, the work (and the dreaming) doesn’t stop. We’re finalizing bulb orders, continuing our local store deliveries, and planning ahead for next year’s growing season. September might mark the end of summer blooms, but for us, it’s the start of the next chapter.
To everyone who visited, picked flowers, or shared in our story this season — thank you. Your support keeps this little farm blooming brighter each year.
